Taxiway Mural Project

WEAD is excited to announce dates for the painting of the last phase of the Taxiway Mural Project: Sat. 03/09 & Sun. 03/10 from 10am-4pm.

Help Paint the Mural!

Help Twin Walls Mural Company complete the Taxiway Mural Project. We’re seeking volunteers from the community to contribute 3 hours of time on March 9 or 10 (Saturday or Sunday) to help paint in the mural outline on the Taxiway’s asphalt surface. Supplies and instructions will be provided.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

WEAD commissioned a massive, multi-modal mural that has been instrumental in the creation of Radium’s new arts hub, Radium Runway, on the Taxiway in Alameda Point.

The first phase was completed in August 2023: a series of 400 sq ft murals, designed by Twin Walls Mural Company and painted by Pablo Ruiz Arroyo and Pancho Pescador. The artists chose to call the mural series “Life of Flight.”

The final phase of the project, the ground mural, has taken a little longer to plan, but we are excited to see it finished in March.

OVERVIEW:

In 2022, WEAD put out an RFP for mural artists inviting them to design a mural for the taxiway, something memorable and playful to inject color into this huge concrete canvas. In 2023, we were offered an opportunity to make that visual statement even more engaging by local nonprofit RADIUM.

RADIUM is creating a 500-seat theater and performing arts center in Alameda Point. RADIUM RUNWAY is a temporary outdoor performance venue which serves to build vision of the RADIUM as work to build the permanent facility goes on.

The Taxiway Mural will focus on the RADIUM RUNWAY space with the artwork both on the asphalt (the current project) and climbing the walls of the shipping containers (the 2023 project) that define the area. We’re thrilled to have an opportunity to bring the artwork up off the ground and to collaborate with Radium to reimagine the Taxiway as arts haven.
